Tūranga, the new Christchurch central library by Architectus in association with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects

23 October 2018

After 5 years of planning and construction Mayor Lianne Dalziel on Friday 12 October 2018 opened Tūranga, the new central library for Christchurch. With over 13,000 visitors on the first weekend, Tūranga has in an instant breathed life back into the cities civic heart Cathedral Square.

The new central library is a visually stunning symbol of hope, unity and rebirth that will fundamentally change the way residents and visitors experience Christchurch’s city centre.

Over 5 storeys and 9500m2 Tūranga celebrates the diversity of our culture and heritage and creates a social hub for the visitor to access and share knowledge through a range of media, and it advances literacy and lifetime learning.
