Ergon Energy Training & Development Skills Facility

Ergon Energy Training & Development Skills Facility

Ergon’s Training & Development Skills Facility at Rockhampton is an adaptation and extension of the city’s disused Electricity Supply Powerhouse, originally built in 1924.

Located on the eastern edge of the Fitzroy River, the old Powerhouse building has a unique architectural presence in the city, showcasing Rockhampton’s rapid industrial development in the Federation era.

The form and fabric of the original brick Turbine Hall have been retained in the new facility and complemented by the steel structural frame and corrugated cladding elements designed into the new addition, a reference to the iron industrial elements original to the site.

The focus of the facility is on creating collaborative training, integrated work practices and more efficient and pleasurable work environments – a return to practices of specialist training in the Ergon organisation but with the added benefit of providing greater workplace amenity to its users.

Designed by Lend Lease Design in collaboration with Architectus to high standards of environmental sustainability, the new facility has created a unique training centre within the Central Queensland region, honouring the history of Rockhampton while setting new standards in workplace organisation and amenity. The project achieved a 5-star GBCA design rating.
