Tamaki Large Scale Development

Tamaki Large Scale Development

The Tamaki Large Scale Development south-east of Auckland’s CBD is the largest urban regeneration project in New Zealand. It will ultimately deliver 7500 new dwellings to achieve four equally important objectives:

  • Social transformation
  • Economic development
  • Place making
  • Housing resources

The Tamaki Regeneration Company requested proposals from developers to design, deliver and sale mixed-tenure housing and investors to own and manage the new social houses.

Architectus was part of the consortium ‘Tuhono Tamaki’ – led by Fletcher Living – and as part of the design team put together a submission for the first stage of this development which comprised 2500 dwellings.

Tuhono Tamaki’s proposal sets out a robust urban design strategy and identifies key design moves and interventions, building on the stories of the land and the cultural diversity of the locality. 21 individual neighbourhoods were developed as walkable communities and connected via an improved street and open space network. Neighbourhoods offer diverse housing choices with mixed and blind tenure, active street life and safer green spaces.
