Design excellence recognised at NZ Architecture Awards

Architectus received three awards in this year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards gala across public architecture, education and small projects categories.

“All of the award-winners are highly impressive projects,” national awards programme convenor, Jasper van der Lingen said. “They go above competence to reach excellence. They set the benchmark for architectural achievement in New Zealand.”

Congratulations to our clients and all of the teams involved.

Christchurch Bus Interchange / Whakawhitinga Pahi – 2016 New Zealand Architecture Award – Public Architecture

Christchurch Bus Interchange / Whakawhitinga Pahi

The Bus Interchange is the first of the key Christchurch anchor projects to be completed and it sets an excellent precedent in its provision of a high quality public facility. The circulation of the buses is very well handled, as are passenger waiting areas. The building is well-scaled and well laid-out, pleasant to occupy and easy to use – it is spacious, light-filled, comfortable and secure. It also has a sculptural form that serves to declare its presence and celebrate its purpose. It’s great to see an important mode of public transport being given such highly considered treatment.

One of the country’s best swimming pools is the centrepiece of a high-quality, multi-purpose building. Planning clarity allows for the simultaneous staging of many activities. The building is designed to be busy while also allowing its users to focus on their particular pursuit, be it a lesson, training session or competition event. The spectator experience is well-considered, as is the connection to adjacent outdoor courts and playing areas; moveable bleachers enhance this connection. Natural light, glazing and materials are all handled well to produce a venue that encourages both elite performance and enjoyable participation.

Number 5 – 2016 New Zealand Architecture Award – Small Project

Number 5 House

A well-considered and sympathetic addition to a site with two existing buildings has given definition to a sheltered courtyard. The building, which serves as self-contained guest accommodation, keeps just enough discrete distance from the main residence designed by the same architects two decades ago. The language is simple, the materials robust, and the planning is clear. Connections to the existing buildings walk a carefully considered line between formality and ease; the relaxed sequence from deck to courtyard and up to and through the main house is especially well handled.
