A significant milestone was reached for the new Ministry of Justice (MOJ) Papakura Courthouse with a sod-turning ceremony on Tuesday, marking the official start of construction. The site is located on the Pahurehure inlet on Elliot Street, Papakura.
The ceremony was attended by a number of key figures, including mana whenua kaumātua and government officials such as Minister of Justice Hon Paul Goldsmith, Minister for Courts Hon Nicole McKee, and Attorney-General Judith Collins. They were joined by members of the judiciary, representatives from the MOJ, as well as various consultants and contractors involved in the project. The event began with Ngāti Te Ata and Ngāti Tamaoho performing a karanga to open the spiritual space and welcome their ancestors, followed by the turning of the sod and a series of speeches.
We are proud to be part of this important public project and look forward to sharing updates as construction progresses.
