Southbase appointed contractor for Christchurch Central Library
After more than 2 years in the planning, Christchurch’s New Central Library, by Architectus in association with schmidt hammer lassen architects, will enter its next phase with Southbase Construction Ltd having this week been confirmed as the successful Design + Construct contractor.
Detail Design will commence next month with the opening of the new library scheduled for early 2018. Architectus has worked successfully with Southbase before on the Christchurch Bus Interchange, which was the first completed anchor project of the Christchurch Rebuild, opened in 2015.
The New Central Library will be a 21st century knowledge centre networked locally, nationally and internationally. Mayor Lianne Dalziel says “this is the most exciting announcement I’ve been involved in as Mayor. This is what the people of Christchurch have said they want to see – our community libraries have always been popular and beloved, but the New Central Library will be so much more.”
