Tuhiraki, is AgResearch’s new headquarters and research centre located adjacent to the Lincoln University’s campus. NZIA writes of the design “These elegant red sheds sit together comfortably in the rural landscape yet are anything but agricultural in their sophistication. Tuhiraki fosters synergy with Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki Lincoln University and the broader Canterbury region, while embracing the mana whenua narratives. Tuhiraki shifts the dial for a workplace, showing us a path to a light, bright and sustainable collaborative future focused on wellbeing. Meticulously rational planning contributes to a sense of effortless wayfinding and the building’s inhabitants are treated to glare-free views and daylight in all directions. The buildings are naturally ventilated, and the efficient use of locally sourced materials and mass timber deliver a 78 percent reduction in carbon footprint, compared to traditionally built structures. A compelling model for beautiful, sustainable commercial architecture”.
The Pā and Tuhiraki AgResearch win at NZIA Awards 2024
The Jury for Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA honoured two of our projects at the 2024 New Zealand Architecture Awards this past week in Tāmaki Makaurau.
We received awards for:
- The Pā at the University of Waikato; and
- Tuhiraki AgResearch.
The Pā won both best in the Education category and the prestigious Ted McCoy award for Education. Tuhiraki AgResearch was awarded the best in class for the Commercial category.
The Pā, located in Hamilton on the University of Waikato’s Hillcrest campus, is an innovative and versatile facility bringing together four key elements under one roof structure; the wharenui (ceremonial meeting house), student hub, Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao / Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
Designed in collaboration with Jasmax, designTRIBE and Wraight + Associates, the jury stated “The significance of this project cannot be underestimated. Under the guidance of the late Māori Kīngi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, University of Waikato Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato has put a wharenui (communal house) at the heart of its campus and brought together the student hub, the Vice Chancellor executive team and faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies all under one roof. The strength from the massive timber beams and posts, the warmth and generosity of the many gathering and studying spaces, the overall clarity of circulation and response to environmental issues make The Pā a clear recipient of this year’s Ted McCoy Award for Education.
