Grad Toolkit Programme: Wynyard Central site visit

The Architectus Grad Toolkit programme aims to provide critical skills and exposure to aspects of architectural practice for graduates that contribute to their day-to-day development and practical working experience.

As part of this programme, a cohort of graduates from our Auckland studio visited a live building site, Wynyard Central – a residential development at the heart of Wynyard Quarter on Auckland’s Waterfront.

The visit was led by the project’s delivery team who showed their graduate colleagues through the residential development with a particular focus on construction methods and materials.

The project’s construction programming enabled the group to see a range of spaces at different stages through construction – exposed concrete and steel structure found on the upper floors, the reticulation of services and fixing of wall linings on the middle floors, and the lower floors already completed and awaiting inspection.

“We saw an overview of the construction phases which offered a unique educational experience. It was particularly interesting to see how details progress during construction as well as gain a better general understanding of large residential construction. The project team provided insight into the challenges of designing for a waterfront site and discussed some of the unique details and design solutions specific to this project,” says George Ahern, an Architectus Auckland studio graduate.
