Tūranga officially opens its doors

After 5 years of planning and construction, Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel opened Tūranga, the new central library for Christchurch on Friday 12 October 2018. With over 13,000 visitors on the first weekend, Tūranga has, in an instant, breathed life back into the city’s civic heart – Cathedral Square.

The new central library is a visually stunning symbol of hope, unity and rebirth that will fundamentally change the way residents and visitors experience Christchurch’s city centre.

Over 5 storeys and 9500m2, Tūranga celebrates the diversity of our culture and heritage and creates a social hub for the visitor to access and share knowledge through a range of media, and it advances literacy and lifetime learning.
