SeaLink provides a vital link to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, carrying vehicles, passengers and freight to and from Auckland, Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island. SeaLink has for a long time been part of Wynyard Quarter’s maritime and fishing industries and added to Wynyard Quarter’s unique character. Auckland’s hosting of the 36th Americas Cup required relocating SeaLink from Wynyard Wharf to their new base on Hamer Street, on the western edge of Wynyard Point. The terminal building sits on the site like a bridge on a ship – overlooking the foredeck. Ticketing office and waiting area for passengers on foot are the only uses located on ground floor, maximising the site area for vehicle circulation and allowing for clear sight lines. The two levels of workspace are propped up by the building’s base and form a portal for the vehicles arriving to board the ferry.

The terminal’s materiality is influenced by the nearby seawalls constructed in concrete block and sheet piling. The base is made from solid and robust precast concrete whilst the upper floors are clad in a folded perforated metal screen with integrated mahi toi by ringatoi / mana whenua artist Maaka Potini (Ngāti Tamaoho).
