Architectus in association with HDR designed the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital for Queensland Health. The architectural joint venture, as a member of the Exemplar Health Consortium, partnered with Lend Lease to design and deliver the new A$1.8 billion public tertiary teaching hospital using a Public Private Partnership (PPP) delivery model.
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital is part of a 20 hectare integrated health campus on a green-field site at Kawana on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane. It is a world-class health care facility attracting the best staff and servicing the region as the hub in an integrated network of accessible healthcare.
Key features of the design include a large integrated central courtyard and the outdoor room designed to take advantage of the local climate, coastal lifestyle, and the healing properties of natural air and light. These major spaces use the natural environment and landscape to create a hospital that blends buildings with landscape, seamlessly linking inside to out.
Designed to create natural, freely accessible social spaces that takes full advantage of the benign seaside climate, SCUH offers high levels of public and natural amenity and, through connection to the local community, enhances the experience of patients and staff and contributes to their wellbeing.
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital has become the largest public healthcare facility in Australia to achieve the building industry’s highest honour with a ‘6 star’ rating under the green star system for its design and operation.
