Architectus picks up seven awards at the 2019 NZIA Local Awards

We are proud to have had our work recognised through seven awards at this year’s NZIA Local Awards across the commercial, education, housing (multi-unit), heritage, public, interior and planning and urban design categories. The awards honour the best new architecture and its significant role in the ongoing development of New Zealand’s cities, towns and communities.

The Auckland winners were announced on Wednesday, 1 May at the ASB Theatre in Wynyard Quarter.  Architectus received a Commercial Architecture Award and a Resene Colour Award for No.1 Sylvia Park (now known as ANZ Raranga, the first commercial building to kickstart Sylvia Park’s new business hub. Wynyard Central, a new urban residential development offering unique waterfront living and the first development with 7/8 homestar ratings, received a Housing Multi-unit Award. (Jury citation)  Its masterplan, a benchmark for the city which truly addresses the interaction between housing and public realm, was awarded a Planning and Urban Design Award. (Jury citation)

The practice, alongside design partners, Salmond Reed Architects, was also recognised with a Heritage Award for the careful restoration of the gothic revival style University of Auckland’s Building 119, a Category A listed building now providing significant presence and resource for students in the historic hub of the University. The Christchurch chapter of the NZIA local awards took place on Thursday, 6 June at the newly restored Christchurch Town Hall’s James May Theatre.

Tūranga, Christchurch’s new central library, took out awards in the Public Architecture and Interior Architecture categories. Designed in association with Danish practice, Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, the new library is a celebration of Christchurch’s diversity of culture and strong heritage and responds to the city’s desire for a public space that would strengthen a community rocked by devastating earthquakes. (Jury citation)
