Te Aratai College wins Property Industry Award

The new Te Aratai College in Christchurch won the Greenstone Group Education Property Award at the 2022 Property Industry Awards.

A major school rebuild designed for community-whanaungatanga and kōrero, Te Aratai College reflects its diverse community and the pursuit of academic excellence.

The design for Te Aratai College is based on a strong and cohesive framework that organises a ‘Community of Buildings’ to shape a place-based ‘Community of learners’. This approach creates a rich diversity of interior and exterior learning landscapes and experiences for both ākonga (students) and kaiako (teachers).

The range of scales and learning settings throughout both the built and outdoor environments provide an environment that is relatable to ākonga, is engaging and nurturing, while also providing the flexibility for the College to optimise the layout, function and future flexibility for the delivery of an ever-evolving pedagogy.

The design establishes a robust framework of two key courtyards shaped by the learning spaces around them. These courtyards form the heart of the college where ākonga, staff and whanau can come together and be part of the collective learning community.

The flagship Creativity and Innovation building accommodates the primary science, arts, digital technology, hard and soft materials and food technology spaces, while also providing facilities for the neighbouring primary and intermediate schools. The campus includes a wharenui, multi-purpose hall and gymnasium, bringing together the local and wider community for cultural, sporting and community events.

We acknowledge the Ministry of Education, Te Aratai College and our project team on a successful and collaborative partnership and rewarding outcome. Our congratulations also to all award winners of the 2022 Property Industry Awards programme.
