Melbourne Entrepreneurial Centre
Architectus was engaged by the University of Melbourne to undertake full interior design services, including aspirational and functional briefing, for the Melbourne Entrepreneurial Centre (MEC). Located in a unique Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) building in the Melbourne Connect innovation precinct in Carlton, the MEC is the connection of 3 distinct yet complimentary organisations:
- Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP)
- Translating Research at Melbourne (TRaM)
- The Wade Institute
MAP and TRaM are co-located in the CLT building, whereas The Wade Institute is located at Ormond College whilst continuing to be an active member of the entrepreneurial community.
The MEC workplace strategy included maximum flexibility and adaptability, ensuring the ability to respond to the changing needs of MAP and TRaM teams and embrace an environment of innovation.
The drivers for the project were encapsulated by three design principles:
- Object within an Object (respect the CLT)
- No Thing is One Thing (maximise flexibility)
- Changes on Perspective (fresh perspectives)
A fully flexible front of house space was created to accommodate pitching and presenting, drop-in workspace, workshop and hackathons, non-timetabled teaching and learning (Socratic circle style), panel discussions and stand-up events. A flexible furniture system fulfils all functions, with the ability to clear the space entirely if required.
